I’m growing garlic for the first time using cloves from my Uncle’s garden. He has no idea if they are soft neck or hard neck. He told me he just plants them and they grow 😐
Well that’s nice for him but I have a black thumb and am a new gardener. How does you think these look? Is this type of discoloration normal or is it indicative of a deficiency or something? They haven’t been fed and I don’t really water them much. I live close enough to the coast where our ground is wet every morning in zone 9a.

Well it looks like you’ve protected them from cats, that’s a big help
Looks good. I would mulch heavier but you’ll likely be fine unless a frost is coming
I’m in the middle of the US (zone 6b) and my garlic looks like this but it’s not yellow at the tips.
I’d add in some fertilizer, maybe make sure they’re getting a ton of sunlight.
If they are hardneck they’ll grow a garlic scape. You can pull and eat those scapes btw.
I start throwing blood meal on mine when spring hits. Like maybe 1/month, light sprinkle. Until then, I cover with straw. I pull back the straw layer and reduce it dramatically when I hit the first round of blood meal.
