New mushroom growth in my onion bed. Should I dig them out?

  1. if anything, a good sign of healthy soil. I’d probably pull a single onion in the most heavily affected area to check the bulbs, but they look good based on greens.

Fungi are friendly. They help process nutrients like phosphorus, calcium, and potassium. At least that’s what I’ve read; I’m giving them a try and they seem to be improving the soil.

No they’re harmless. Thats a common mushroom (i am
not sure of the exact name but I get this one in my beds too) thats just eating the yummy soil. Fungi that will hurt your plants will be ON the plant as rusts, blights etc. (the confusing one are slime molds which can literally crawl over your plants but don’t actually want anything to do with them).

Mushrooms in nearby soil is a GOOD sign that the soil ecosystem is alive, as the fungi will be breaking down soil material into nutrients that the plants can use.

Typically the more life in your soil the better the soil quality. More life means more likely to have nutrients available for plants to use and more likely to have organisms that counter pests.
