The history of food is the history of humanity. In many ways we’ve been defined by what grows in our gardens. This list of vegetables and fruits our ancestors knew, but that we’ve probably never heard of, is thus a window into our collective history.

  1. We have ground cherries here. People don’t grow them, but they grow wild and are picked when someone feels like it.
