A week ago, the Council of Mallorca ceded part of the Parc de Ses Vies by the Via Cintura to Palma Town Hall in order to enable the development of a Botanical Garden. On Tuesday, the necessary amendment was made to Palma’s urban plan for this garden.
The amendment applied to more than just this project, as it envisages expanding potential uses of four other facilities under what are called the city’s “general systems” “for the enjoyment and recreation of citizens, such as botanical gardens, amusement parks, zoos, circuses, aquariums, or bullrings”. Folk events, nightclubs with shows, music competitions are all referred to. The other facilities are the Auditorium, the Teatre Principal, the Plaça de Toros (bullring) and S’Escorxador.
As to the specific plan for the botanical garden, the intention is to have examples of different types of Mediterranean forest, a herbarium, an auditorium, exhibition halls and offices.
The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, said last week that the agreement with the Council represented “one more step in the transformation of the city with a project of urban regeneration that will be a benchmark for sustainability, science and culture”.
An issue the town hall will have to contend with in developing the site concerns shanties that are on the land. Local residents, meanwhile, aren’t that convinced. They fear they will lose a dog-walking area and in general feel that this is a project announcement on top of others that don’t get completed.
