CHICAGO (WLS) — This past weekend marked Reverse the Red Day, a worldwide celebration of conservation.

The group is dedicated to stopping extinctions and protecting endangered species.

Dr. Silvia Alvarez-Clare, director of the Global Tree Conservation Program at The Morton Arboretum, and Johanna Hutchins, orchid flori-culturist at the Chicago Botanic Garden, joined ABC7 Chicago Tuesday to talk more about it.

The Chicago Botanic Garden and The Morton Arboretum are pledging to safeguard threatened tree and plant species across continents, they said.

The two institutions are co-hosting the global botanical garden community in Chicago, in partnership with Botanic Gardens Conservation International, at the ninth Global Botanic Gardens Congress in August 2027.

This will be the first time the Congress will be held in North America in 27 years, they said.
