Woke up to my boy like this whimpering on the steps. The true meaning of FAFO. He was definitely embarrassed getting loaded into the truck to go to the vet.

Glad you took him to the vet! I grew up pretty poor and didn’t have that kind of money. I always felt so bad pulling quills without any pain killers for our dogs. Btw, quills are painful AF!!!!

Hopefully just a learning experience and no permanent damage. That one close to his right eye looks concerning.
Please post a follow up so we can enjoy the rest of this episode.

Awww please post a follow up. I hope he’s doing ok.

Oh, he met a spicy squirrel I see! Poor baby. Mine got into it and it was an expensive lesson probably not learned 🙁 condolences to your pip and your wallet for the emergency vet visit).

Please tell me that spike is in his eyelid and not his eyeball or I might shrivel up into a cringeball and die

Poor baby! Please give us updates on his Health status 🥺 hoping he gets well soon !

Poor thing really got them too! Unfortunately they seldom learn.

  8. Bugibba

Well the good news is is he’ll probably never follow up investigating a porcupine again! Sorry hes going thru that!

I’m sure your vet will talk to you about this, but monitor him closely in the sites there were quills, for weeks to months. Quills have barbs in them which cause directional, deeper migration, which is why it’s really great you took him immediately to get them removed. Some however always have a chance of having broken off on impact, so pup needs to be watched carefully for quills popping up other places I.e. if he randomly starts to drool in a month, his mouth should be checked for a quill, etc.

Hunting guy with dogs here. Get a rope, tie a piece of pvc pipe about 6-8 inches long, send the rope through the pipe. Pipe in dogs mouth hold on to the rope while straddling the dog, now get your buddy to get a pair of pliers and go to town. Real shit duty but…

    God speed brother, it happens.

Good Lord man!! Hope it is a speedy recovery🙏

Oh my poor guy. Did you have to take him to the vet? I’m pretty uneducated on the subject. I hope he’s ok

  15. bromancebladesmith

Oof yea been there, the vets are very familiar with our dogs and their porcupine adventures

I found one under my dog’s tongue pushing through his lower jaw two days after taking him to the vet and having them removed. It didn’t seem to be bothering him but if I hadn’t have found it, it could have gotten infected. Sorry your boy got so many. I hope he mends quickly and learns from this experience.

Happened to my boy this last summer, definitely startling. Emergency vet up here (not a super populated area) said they deal with ~10 quillings per night, I couldn’t believe it. Said they have a few “repeat customers”, even some who have been back in the same week 🙈 Hope for a quick and easy de-quilling!

That poor pup! The quill directly in their eye is especially hard to look at 😬

Took my husky mix a couple times to learn porcupines aren’t fun. First time was face and legs from her husky pounce. Then the second time was still like a dozen right in her nose like she was trying to sneak a nippins

Been there recently along with the excruciating 1 hr drive to the vet and yelling at him to stop scratching at his face.

You can sometimes pull them yourself but when it’s this severe and there’s a lot of mouth, eye, etc stuff going on, vet is the way to go.

Hope he is ok, OP. Please let us know

Oh, God!! I remember my 2 pooches in the ‘60’s , coming back to my tent, looking just like this! A local showed me how to remove them with nippers.

  22. kevin-dom-daddy

Poor baby! That’s a hard way to find out about porcupines. I hope that one quill didn’t get his eye.

  23. YourHooliganFriend

Oh my goodness 😳. Glad to read he’s doing okay.

  24. Fun-Sprinkles-6758

Oh he got it good. That sucks. Happened to my friends springer when we were pheasant hunting. Had to drive 4 hours to the closest vet in BFE Montana.

  25. Any_Needleworker_273

Oh poor boy!! Wishing him (her) a speedy recovery and a porcupine free future!!

Our two Brittany’s did this. Our male had bad breath for months, it was because even after the vet visit he still had internal quills. The last one came out 3 months after the incident. Then his breath went back to normal.

  27. No-Pain-5496

Absolutely a learning g experience. Sorry you have to do the doctoring, I hope all is well in the end
