His Longmeadow property, like so much of the county has been dogged by floods. This was a photo – like several others over recent weeks – of flooding posted to his 1.3 million followers on his Instagram account themontydon.

This was on February 6, the third time, at least that his garden has been flooded with him posting pretty much the same photo on January 13 and then again on January 29.

Monty Don reveals location of his favourite gardens – and it’s no contest

In spite of the torrential rain and challenges of creating beautiful gardens in it, Monty who has been presenting a series of gardens across the world, insists that the best gardens, because of the climate, are at home.

Meantime writing in the BBC Gardeners’ World magazine Monty admitted that all his years gardening have taken their toll on his health.

He wrote: “For the last 10 years or more my knees have been giving me the gyp and, it turns out, slowly deteriorating. This is not so unusual or unexpected.

“I have spent 70 years kneeling on them, asking them to stagger about under unreasonably heavy loads or, until 10 years ago, pounding around tarmacked roads. They have had a long, hard time of it.”
