A long-serving volunteer at the Llangollen and Corwen Railway received an emotional surprise after being presented with an invitation to attend His Majesty The King’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
The presentation was made at the Llangollen Railway in front of colleagues and fellow volunteers, marking over four decades of service by Hazel Birkenhead, whose dedication has played a vital role in the life of the railway.
Described as the ‘volunteer’s volunteer’, Hazel is known for being the person who arrives early every weekend to prepare breakfasts, helping start the day for those working across the railway. Her warmth, generosity and tireless commitment is described as having made her a familiar and much-loved figure among staff and volunteers at the Llangollen Railway.
Held in the railway’s mess room, the presentation was an emotional occasion for those who have worked alongside Hazel. Staff and volunteers of the Llangollin railway wanted to acknowledge her years of contribution and wholeheartedness in person, reflecting the high esteem they hold her in.
The invitation to His Majesty’s Garden Party is not only a personal milestone for Hazel, but also a reflection of the strong community spirit and the profound friendships grown and nurtured through years of shared passion and dedication.
Plans are already underway to celebrate her visit to Buckingham Palace in May with a special send off from her colleagues.

“I’m completely overwhelmed. I never expected anything like this. I don’t do what I do for recognition, I just enjoy helping people and being part of the railway family. It’s been a huge part of my life, and I’m very proud to be involved.”
Hazel Birkinhead, Volunteer and recipient of His Majesty’s Invitation.
“Hazel is a true champion of our railway. For decades she has quietly supported volunteers and staff, often behind the scenes, asking for nothing in return. People like Hazel are the backbone of heritage railways, and this recognition is richly deserved. We are incredibly proud to be sending her to Buckingham Palace and to see her dedication acknowledged in this way.”
