Rooftop Gardens in Rose Lane is operated by Oceanfront GOS Ltd, which entered the liquidation process on January 27 this year, owing creditors more than £1.2 million.

The company was due in court the following day for owing HMRC more than £408,000 in VAT, with the tax office filing a winding-up petition to shut the company down.

Oceanfront GOS Ltd’s sole director is Antonia Hillier. Its largest unsecured creditor, owed £540,000, is Caps Property Limited – a company run by Miss Hillier and her brother Sotiris Christophi.

According to its accounts on Companies House, Oceanfront GOS Ltd also owed its director, Miss Hillier, almost £237,000.

Another company, Norfolk Business Management Limited, is also listed on Rooftop Gardens’ website in relation to the ownership of the city centre venue.

However, the company, which was renamed Eastern Energy Group Limited in 2021, currently has no active directors or shareholders after Jamie Rennie resigned from both positions last week.

Companies in the UK are required by law to have at least one director and one shareholder.

Meanwhile, Rooftop Gardens, which opened on the top of the Union Building office block in Rose Lane in 2016, remains open to customers.

It is advertised as Norwich’s first and only rooftop restaurant and bar, with 360-degree panoramic views of the city’s landmarks, including the cathedral, castle and Carrow Road.

Rooftop Gardens was contacted for comment.

When we called Rooftop Gardens and asked to speak to Miss Hillier, the woman who answered our call said: “Antonia Hillier is no longer with the business.”

BAR TAB

Last week staff at Atlas SEO, a digital marketing agency based in offices in the same building as Rooftop Gardens, ran up a £3,000 tab at the bar and restaurant after being told on Thursday (February 5) that Atlas SEO was closing, with all 50 jobs at risk of redundancy.

An employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said the company’s chief executive opened a bar tab for staff at the top-floor venue above their office.

The company did not confirm who picked up the tab.

It has led to speculation as to who and where Rooftop Garden customers are now paying their money to.
