Short days, persistent rainfall, and cooler weather provide perfect growing conditions for moss to overtake weary lawns. Healthy grass typically thrives by growing quickly enough to occupy available space.
During the winter months, grass growth significantly slows whilst moss continues developing. Combine this with reduced sunlight, saturated soil, compacted pathways and a nutrient-deficient lawn, and you’ve created the ideal environment for moss invasion.
Whilst various natural moss-removal techniques exist, such as employing baking soda and washing-up liquid, these are only suitable for minor moss problems on lawns. For “serious moss issues”, there’s only one solution worth considering, according to gardening expert Josh at Lawn Care Pro.
He advised: “For serious moss issues, you need to use a chemical moss killer containing ferrous sulphate to get rid of moss.” When applying these ferrous sulphate treatments, simply spread them across your lawn and allow approximately two weeks for the moss to turn black or brown.

This colour transformation in the dead moss helps identify any patches you might have missed. Subsequently, you can remove the moss using either a spring tine rake or a lawn scarifier.
The specialist clarified that “the reason this works” is because the iron content in ferrous sulphate extracts all moisture from the moss, regardless of soil dampness.
The expert warned, “This kills the moss, but it can also kill the grass as well if you’re not careful. Always apply moss killer with caution, targeting areas of grass with a particular moss problem.”

You can also buy lawn sand products that are specifically designed to help with moss control due to their iron content.
Moreover, there are mixtures available that combine moss control, weed killer, and fertiliser, which not only eradicate moss but also deal with other garden weeds on your turf, improving the overall health of your lawn.
These handy all-in-one mixes are usually applied to the lawn using a spring tine rake.
Following this, you can wait for two weeks before removing the dead moss from your lawn.
