Since 1987, gardens of all sizes have been open for the public as part of the Wivenhoe Open Gardens which fundraises for causes in the village.

The Wivenhoe Society, who organise the event, are looking for people who would like to open their garden over the weekend of May 16 and 17.

Last year, there were 700 people who visited 35 gardens, with people coming from Essex and further afield.

The event raised £5,000 which was split in half firstly to the St Mary’s Church Fabric Fund for the repair and maintenance of this historic building.

This year the Wivenhoe Society will be raising money to help causes in the area and to fundraise for St Marys Church to maintain the fabric of the building.

The Wivenhoe Society received the other half which was distributed between 25 organisations in the area for their worthwhile projects.

A spokesperson for the society said the event is something many appreciate, saying: “It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is, all gardens have a unique character and will be admired.

“It is heartwarming when people say nice things about your garden.

“So please do have a think about opening your garden. You might consider just opening it for one day, either the Saturday, or the Sunday, if you don’t fancy opening it for both days.”

The society is proposing that the gardens be open from 11am to 5pm on both days.

If you are interested, please can you let Karl and Helen Douzier know on 01206 823164 or by email on KarlHelen104@gmail.com.

Or you can let Dave Harrison know on 01206 827250 or by email on ndharrison@btinternet.com.

Please let the society know by March 31 at the latest, so programmes can be made.

The weekend costs £5 and under 14s, who must be accompanied, can go free with all venues being cash only.

Refreshments and displays of arts and crafts can be enjoyed in some of the gardens and the church will be open for refreshments.
