AMES, Iowa – After Polk County Paula predicted an early spring for central Iowa , the perfect way to kick off the season was at the Reiman Garden Orchid Fest.
“With Valentine’s Day, of course, coming up and then Groundhog Day just before. It’s kind of a nice way to get into the spirit with lots of color and fresh growing plants and just kind of get to get in the mood for what’s to come in the spring,” said Brian Johnson, President of the Central Iowa Orchid Society.
This annual event, hosted at Iowa State’s Reiman Gardens, features a wide range of orchid species, colors and forms. Attendees spanned from expert growers to those who just wanted to wander through the showcase of orchids.
‘Smelly Roll’ to bloom at Reiman Gardens, how it compares to ‘Stink Floyd’
“I mean, these in here are gorgeous, and that’s why we came here, because there’s a wide range of the flowers and the knowledgeable people because I find like at Lowe’s and some of those stores, if you find the right garden person, they know stuff, but usually you’re on your own to do your own research,” said event goer Jane Rechkemmer.
The festival is hosted in partnership with the Central Iowa Orchid Society , which hosts this event to inspire future gardeners ahead of the spring season.
“A big part of this event is, of course, you know, getting plants out to people, especially plants that they might not see as frequently,” said Johnson. “As you watch, you know, news stories of insect and animal populations crashing. It’s kind of discouraging. But through gardening, even just a small wild or flower garden, you can just give that much back to the world around you.”
The Orchid Fest has concluded, but Reiman Gardens is ready for a new group of guests as their VooDoo Lily “Smelly Roll” is likely to bloom this week. Much like the infamous “Stink Floyd” the bloom emits the smell of rotting meat and lasts around 24 hours once opened.
