Hi, I am a student, which means that I can't water my plants often, so I wanted to experiment with hydroponics. 1 week later it failed: what can I change and is it possible to get started with nothing with the Kratky method?

  • used small basil plants I could no longer care for

  • rinsed the soil and put the plants in clay balls in a pierced pot

  • filled with tap water, which rested for 1 day to less than 1 cm from the bottom of the net/pierced pot

Water level might be too high. But there are a number of issues if you are leaving alone for long periods of time. My basil on the stove will suck the water out of a 1/4 filled mason jar in a few days especially if it’s only in water vs nutrients. When they run out of water they wilt. If you catch it in time, adding water can bring it back.

If the water level is too high, the roots cant get O2. Also going from soil to hydro requires different roots.
