UNION CITY, TENN. (KFVS) – Members of the Tennessee Farm Bureau women’s group presented an “Ag in the Classroom” program featuring a “Gardening in a Glove” activity to second-graders at Union City Elementary School.
The “Ag in the Classroom” program focuses on the life cycle of a plant and the importance of plants in everyday life.
The “Gardening in a Glove” activity taught students about the germination process and seeds evolving into sprouts. Students received a plastic glove and placed a squash seed in each finger covered by a damp cotton ball.

Members of the women’s group plan to return to the classroom in the next few weeks to determine if the seeds have sprouted. If so, the sprouts may be transplanted to gardening beds in the school’s courtyard.
TFBI representative Carol Baker also read the book, “First Peas to the Table” by Susan Grigsby, to students. According to UCES teacher Kristy Long, the book taught students about plant growth, teamwork and farm-to-table learning.
