TORQUAY P-6 College is in desperate need of willing volunteers to help keep the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program alive.

The long-standing program allows Grade 5 and Grade 6 students to harvest food in the garden and then put their cooking to the test in the kitchen.

The community-based initiative requires five volunteers for each one of the three classes a week.

Program co-ordinator Terri Mintram said there were plenty of benefits that came from participating.

“Our students love working with our volunteer’s guidance to learn about what is grown in our gardens and how we can put it to good use.

“We all sit down at the end of the lesson to share the food; it gives us a great chance to connect.

“Ultimately we would love to get more volunteers together on top of our regulars. They love to socialise together afterwards and get a coffee afterwards. Any help is appreciated.”

This coming week the students are planning on rolling pasta, making pesto from the basil in the garden and organising a salad of the imagination.

“We’ve got so much on the go, including some zucchini fritters and an apple and plum crumble from our plum tree.”

Ms Mintram extended her thanks to Mitre 10, SouthPoint Garden Supplies and Bunnings for their help in enclosing the gardens from recent vandalism.
