  1. For me I'd like to be mostly self sufficient in vegetables and a few fruits but obviously I will still have to buy meat and eggs and some fruit, I know chickens don't need much space but I'm allergic to feathers. I like Bananas and oranges which we obviously can't grow here. I don't currently have room for fruit trees but I'd love to find my next house with a big enough garden to grow a few fruit trees.

  2. Really good points Huw, I think it's about prioritising what you/your family will eat/use the most over the growing season. We're currently digging up our entire small, urban garden 😅 and incorporating more growing areas. Your new book will be so helpful! Have a lovely weekend!

  3. 100% ❤ I only have a small garden and will never be fully self sufficient but over the summer/autumn months last year, I did grow all of my own salad, tomatoes and leafy greens. That's a massive win!! 🎉

  4. I have not bought an onion since July 2025. I would say that I have been self sufficient at never having to buy an onion.😅 I have so many onions planted now and seed some to try this year.

  5. I love this outlook, it's how I approach my garden every season. It's about what brings me joy while feeding my family. It seems so hard for people to understand that I can be self sufficient in squash, herbs, tomatoes, beans, and berries. These are also some of the most expensive items at the grocer's.

I might try carrots and potatoes this year.
