Whilst cats are beloved pets, they can wreak havoc on gardens by treating them as litter trays and disturbing flower beds. Fortunately, specialists have developed effective methods to keep felines out of your outdoor spaces.

Under the Animal Welfare Act of 2006, nuisance neighbourhood cats must never be harmed, yet homeowners frequently discover their gardens damaged. Cats roam freely wherever they choose, often wandering into gardens and treating them as toilets or play areas.

A spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk explained: “The UK is famous for its love of animals, but affection for our four-legged friends rarely extends to allowing your garden to become a toilet.

“Nobody wants to cause them any harm, but you’ve got to try to stay one step ahead if you want to maintain a clean lawn and undisturbed flower beds.

“Cats are cunning creatures and may become wise to your tricks, so it’s important to regularly vary your methods.”, reports the Express.

“Homeowners who would rather not welcome felines to their gardens can follow our tips for keeping them out.”

Plants

Introducing particular plants that “cats hate” to troublesome areas can encourage them to stay away from your garden.

Successful plants include canina (lavender), which humans adore for its fragrance but can be somewhat overpowering for cats.

If you’re planning to cultivate garlic, it can also help deter cats from your outdoor area.

Scattering coffee granules or citrus peel around the rear of your garden can also help repel cats, as these are potent scents.

Rough ground

Just like other animals, cats detest rough surfaces, so placing chicken wire under mulch or incorporating it into the top layer of soil can be effective.

Cats will also try to avoid areas strewn with stones or pebbles, so arranging these around the garden’s edge can work well.

Maintaining cleanliness

Above all, maintaining a clean garden is crucial. This includes securing bins, decluttering to eliminate potential hiding spots for mice, and ensuring no food waste is left out.

The experts further advised: “Check no potential toys are lying around and dispose of any existing cat poo used to mark their territory.”
