February might be full of pink-hued tropes and touchstones around the middle of the month — pink hearts, pink candies, darling decorations that boast a rosy sheen — but Descanso Gardens is in the pink a week ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Longtime visitors and devoted fans of the La Cañada Flintridge property’s Japanese Garden surely know what is beautifully blooming: The first cherry blossoms of the season are beginning to pop.

True, the peak of the cheerful cherry season tends to arrive right around the end of March or beginning of April, which is also when the thousands of tulips planted along the Descanso Gardens Promenade are reaching their zazzy zenith.

But if you’re hoping to bask in the first days of the fruit tree bloom at a spot that has long been synonymous with Okame cherry trees and the “delicate” and delightfully frilly dressing they being to assume each February, make your way to Descanso Gardens in the days ahead of Valentine’s, and afterwards, too.

A bloomful bonus? That wintry wonder, the camellia, is adding bright color and petal lushness to the garden, as are the adorable pollinator sculptures now festooning the Descanso Railroad area.

Other garden-glad sights are ahead at some leafy Southern California spot: A dozen TROLLS, all quirky creations crafted by artist Thomas Dambo, will take up residence, for a limited time, at South Coast Botanic Garden in March.
