Yesterday I forgot to turn off the water in the high tunnel. The temperature last night was 26Β° outside. When I finally got the water off and I started looking around I had tons of 1/2 inch sun sugar tomatoes that sprouted. Temperature is going back down to the teens next week. We'll see if any survive. If they don't I'm sure the tomato seed bank has heavily deposited. I did not get the dead tomatoes pulled untill a couple mths ago
But it also depends on your weather and what zone youβre in. I know youβre (I think) in the UK somewhere, and Iβm in Houston Texas. My tomatoes will not give fruit Midsummer because itβs too hot. I have to start my tomatoes indoors in February if I wanna see some harvest before June. And then I get a second round after September when temperatures start to come down a little bit. But my goodness, your tomatoes sure are beautiful. ββοΈππ½β₯οΈ
Well Mr Richards, my tomatoes grow and produce year round. I have something called a desert. I plant tomatoes every other year just to keep them fresh. Timing does make a difference but even when I plant tomatoes in winter they grow a little slower but it's not a problem. I guess I am blessed. I realize you are targeting an audience that has four seasons or a temperate climate. The desert garden is a split season with a small possibility of frost but some years it never drops below freezing or even close to freezing. It's sunny today and 82*F outside in the middle of February. Have a great day Huw and thank you for sharing. Please pray for Mr Charles Dowding as he has said he's been diagnosed with cancer.
I usually sowes my tomatoes last week in February ( because usually am on holiday then). Tho last year didn't do them until mid March and they still went rampant in the house. The front rooms up and downstairs were a jungle.
Totally agree with you. My packet tomato seeds says to plant seeds indoor End of February to end of April. I just wait til last frost and plant a few weeks after in the greenhouse.
Thank you, Huw! I have grow lights this year so will try starting indoors. We have a short cool summer here in Seattle so I've never had good luck with tomates. Maybe this is the year!
