Hosta is a must have in the garden, this shade tolerant plant will fill spots in the garden and on patios where other plants struggle to grow and thrive. Hostas have large lush leaves, with the rolled up leaves poking through the surface in early springtime and leaves unravelling as they grow out of the ground.
A Hosta is ideally planted in the ground or pots in February, as this gives the roots time to establish in time for springtime. A layer of mulch will protect the Hosta before they show in early springtime. The best spot for Hosta is in shaded areas with moist but free draining soil.
When planting, the roots can be gently placed into a hole in the ground or pot and covered over.
Hosta can cope with sunshine but ideally not all day to avoid continuous direct warmth and drying out.
Hosta will give us lovely green leaves from spring to early autumn, when growth of new shoots stops and they start to dieback, fall dormant over wintertime and return with new leaves the following springtime.
There is a whole variety of Hosta with different tones of greens and sizes of leaves.
