HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – With less than four hours until tip-off, UConn men’s basketball fans are making their way to New York City for tonight’s top 25 matchup against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
Union Station in New Haven put up banners to welcome fans making the trip to watch the Huskies, with several trains carrying supporters to Grand Central Station throughout the afternoon.
Fans embrace ‘Storrs South’ tradition
UConn fans are bringing back their own name for Madison Square Garden: “Storrs South,” reflecting the strong Husky presence at the venue when the team plays there.
Evan Merchant of Colchester, a UConn alum, is taking his first trip ever to Madison Square Garden with friends. He hopes UConn continues their winning streak tonight.
“Every time they play at MSG they call it Storrs South for a reason. I think it’s going to be a close game. I only see them winning by maybe a handful or so but it’s going to be a good one,” Merchant said.
Mixed fan base making the trip
While UConn supporters dominated the scene at Union Station, some St. John’s fans were also spotted making the journey to the game.
One train carrying fans departed at 4:25 p.m., and additional trains are still available for fans wanting to make it to the 8 p.m. tip-off.
The passionate and dedicated UConn fans gathering at Union Station demonstrated the enthusiasm surrounding Friday’s matchup between the two ranked teams.
