Just in time for Valentine’s Day, community members are invited to learn about the harmonious, vibrant pillars of soil health to achieve vigorous, resilient gardens. Veteran Clallam County Master Gardener Dave Eberle will present “Love Your Soil” as part of the Green Thumb Education Series on Thursday, Feb. 12, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms, 308 E. Fourth Street in Port Angeles.
During the presentation, Eberle will highlight key soil properties and ways gardeners can determine their own soil’s texture, compaction, and drainage. He will also clarify the benefits of clay in soil and how to manage excessive clay, examine recent discoveries on the role microbes play in feeding plants and protecting them from disease, and discuss the four principles of soil health that have revolutionized both commercial agriculture and backyard gardening.
Eberle is the co-lead Master Gardener of the Woodcock Demonstration Garden and serves as lead Master Gardener for the vegetable garden at Woodcock, which showcases the four principles of soil health. He also serves on the Clallam County Master Gardener Foundation Board and received the National Presidential Achievement Award in 2025.
The Green Thumb Education Series is sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners and is held in person, typically on Thursdays from January through May and September through November. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. For the latest information on upcoming presentations, visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar.
