Firstly, I had new lawn laid in August. This corner of the garden hasn’t survived very well, I think primarily due to cats using that corner as an entry point to the garden. Will the grass grow back or do I need to re-seed? And if I’m to re-seed, do I need to wait till frosts have gone?

Second question is, I planted some of the larger allium varieties and they are growing already. It’s quite windy – should I attach them to a bamboo?

Thank you 🙂

The grass is probably competing with the tree for nutrients and light. What sort of tree is it?

  2. Lawn from rolls is grown in wide open areas with full sun, ideal drainage and nutrients. It’s been transplanted into an area in shade; has run off from paving and possibly compaction and is now in competition with a tree and will never cope. Mulch the area and plant in partial shade tolerant ground cover as even if you reseed, the only types which might survive will be different cultivars/species which will look different and grow at different rates.

It’s really hard to keep grass under trees without it being longer.

You could try topdressing and reseeding with a different type of hardy grass seed. Or Leaving the grass longer all over or have that area a different height as a nature strip.

It will be because of the apple tree, which also needs a good prune and cut back.

Looks like your apple? tree is shading that area out if anything. Could do with a good summer pruning. Grass might struggle there by the look of it.

If they’re giant aliums and it’s exposed yes, if not they’ll be fine but no harm in giving them some support
