From bright, open living spaces to bathrooms and bedrooms with little light and high humidity, every room in the home creates different conditions for houseplants. Choosing plants that suit their surroundings will make them “healthier, longer-lasting and far easier to care for”, according to an expert.
For example, succulents love direct light, while snake plants and prayer plants can survive in lower lighting conditions. Emma Fell, head of horticulture at Hillier Garden Centres, has shared three reliable houseplants and where they thrive best in the home. The expert also shared simple tips for keeping them looking their best.

Monstera (Swiss cheese plant)
The expert said: “If you’re looking to make a statement in a living room or an open-plan space, Monstera (Swiss cheese plant) is a brilliant choice.
“Its large, glossy leaves instantly add impact and create a relaxed, indoor jungle feel. Monstera enjoys bright, indirect light and a warm spot away from harsh sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.”
Water when the top layer of compost feels dry, and feed during spring and summer to support healthy growth. When the plant is given the right conditions, it’s a “rewarding plant” that can quickly become a statement.
Sansevieria (snake plant)
Snake plants are ideal if you want greenery in your home without too much maintenance. The expert said: “They’re incredibly resilient and happy in everything from bright rooms to lower-light areas, making them perfect for home offices, hallways or bedrooms.
“Their upright, architectural leaves suit smaller spaces, while their slow growth means they won’t outgrow their spot too quickly. Allow the compost to dry out between waterings, as they prefer drier conditions and are much happier with a little neglect than too much attention.”

Peace lilies are gorgeous houseplants, and make great bedroom and bathroom plants, according to the expert. This is because these rooms are naturally more humid.
Emma noted: “Their elegant white flowers and deep green leaves bring a calm, fresh feel to a space. They cope well with lower light levels, although they’ll flower best in brighter positions out of direct sun. Keep the compost lightly moist and remove faded blooms to keep the plant looking tidy.”
Peace lilies are very good at letting you know when they need watering, according to the expert, as they’ll slightly droop.
Emma continued: “Choosing houseplants that suit each room makes them easier to care for and more likely to thrive. With the right placement and a little regular attention, houseplants can bring lasting beauty and a calm, welcoming feel to your home.”
