The December meeting of the Metropolis Garden Club was a potluck with 13 members and one guest in attendance.

Members enjoyed a potluck lunch, collected donated items for COPE Food Pantry and exchanged presents.

After the luncheon, club president Anne Parmley was presented with a lifetime membership in the Garden Clubs of Illinois for her years of service. The presentation was made by club vice president Sharon Lynn.

The club met at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 12 in the Metropolis Community Center with 12 members attending.

Refreshments and decorations were provided by Janis Bradford and Jan Broadway. Parmley called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. The pledges to the United States flag and the Garden Club flag were led by Lynn.

There was no change from the previous treasurer’s report submitted by club treasurer Audrey Williams.

Minutes from the November 2025 meeting were approved as submitted by club secretary Kim Henley.

• Those who helped with the decorating and “undecorating” of the Curtis Home were thanked.

• Notice was given that dues — $15 per person or $20 per household — will be collected at the February meeting. Checks should be made out to Metropolis Garden Club.

• Members were reminded to save the date for Among the Dogwoods, a club flower show presented by the Paducah Garden Club from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, and 8 a.m. until noon Thursday, April 16, at City of Paducah City Hall, 300 S. Fifth St., Paducah.

• A thank you note was received from COPE Food Pantry.

• Bees, Birds and Butterflies — Sheila Richey presented information from an article in the Outdoor Illinois Journal entitled, “The Silent Trespasser: How Herbicide Drift is Threatening Illinois’ Wild Landscapes.”

• Horticulture — Parmley shared information regarding frost seeding. Members learned how the repeated freeze-and-thaw cycle of the winter months is ideal for the germination of many varieties of seeds.

• Ornithological Christmas Bird Count — Parmley reported the results of two December sessions. On Dec 14, 2025, 43 species and a total of 868 birds were observed. On Dec 23, 2025, 51 species were seen and a total of 870 birds were observed.

• Garden Therapy — Joyce Taylor lead members in making 100 Valentines for local nursing home residents. The treats will be delivered to the residents on Feb. 10.

Information regarding times and places for upcoming events was announced.

The next official Metropolis Garden Club Meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 9, at 9:30 a.m. at the Metropolis Community Center, 900 W. 10th St. Hosts will be Lynn and Williams. The program entitled “Bird House Gourds” will be presented by Beth Moller. Members are encouraged to bring acrylic paints and brushes to embellish the gourds.
