Anne Geddes inspired a generation of moms and photographers!
Geddes, who rose to notoriety in 1996 with her first coffee table book, Down in the Garden, continues to work with families to take unforgettable shots of little ones.
As the anniversary of her first book approaches this fall, the photographer, 69, is looking to reconnect with some of her first young models.
Sharing a photo titled “Fiona Butterfly” of a baby girl named Fiona at 3 weeks old in 1995, she wrote, “Fiona is on the cover of my very first coffee table book, ‘Down in the Garden.’ ”

She continued, “At the time I shot this image, her parents were our next-door neighbors! Tiny Fiona looked exquisite in her little outfit, lying on top of these huge hand-painted butterfly wings … simple, impactful and everything is real, as are the majority of images in the book.”
Geddes credited Oprah Winfrey with helping her book hit the New York Times bestseller list in 1996.
“@oprah was instrumental in launching the book in 1996 – on to the @nytimes bestseller list. 2026 is the 30th anniversary of the launch, meaning every baby in the book would now be in their early to late 30’s!”
The photographer is hoping to reconnect with the models and see where they’re at today.
“If you were one of the babies in [Down in the Garden] I’d love to hear what you’re up to today. DM me a recent photo and tell me all your news – I’m putting together a highlights reel which I’ll add to as we go through the year! Spread the word 🥰XOAnne.”
Geddes became a photographer at the age of 30 after moving to Melbourne with her husband for his job. The decision put her on track to be one of the world’s most beloved photographers, having sold millions of books celebrating babies over the last three decades.
