I started some tomato plants early as an experiment (my first time). I got wonderful quick germination. But the stems were white at first signs of germination, then all turned purple. It’s out of the frame, but the grow lights is about a 1.5” above the plants. Google references a phosphorus issue, I’m wondering if it’s typical and they’ll grow out of it? Or something I need to adjust going forward when I start the bulk of my plants, thanks!

Normal. A lot of tomatoes have some visible anthocyanin.

I have had them look like that before and be totally fine, tomato plants are strong, personally i wouldn’t worry about it, but yea there could be some kind of under or over abundance of a mineral.

A seedling with only cotyledons wouldn’t show any mineral deficiencies or surpluses; it is still feeding off the energy from its endosperm.

Your tomatoes have purple stems because they are purple. That’s pretty normal. 👍

    Happy growing!

What grow light do you have? Some plants will turn purple from strong light. They look fine, don’t put the light too close, it can damage seedlings.

Last year my san marzano seedlings were almost totally purple all the way into their second set of true leaves, they turned out great in the end..nothing to worry about
