I hope the freeze did not affect you too much.
We lost some plants even though they were covered, the rest were brought inside. Hopefully they will be able to live outside again soon.
Talking about plants, the Coldspring Garden Club meets on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the Coldspring Community Center by the Courthouse. Some members will eat at noon in the Senior Center. If you would like to join them, call the Senior Center before 10 a.m. at (936) 653-4175.
•Coldspring Senior Center is holding a dinner-dance on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Running from 6 p.m. till 10 p.m., you may enjoy dancing to a DJ and eat a delicious meal. Tickets are on sale at the Center. If you don’t dance but like good company, this is a good place to be.
•Coldspring Chamber of Commerce are in the midst of their Best of San Jacinto County nominations and voting competition. Go to their website to nominate you favorite person, business or organization or collect a paper form from the office. Feb. 6 is the last day for nominations. The winners will be announced at the banquet on March 28. Details on that later and voting will continue into March, so you have plenty of time.
•Coldspring Library will hold its Edith Clark’s Princess Tea Party on Saturday, Feb. 28. You can book your seats at one of two sittings. First will be from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and the second one is from 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. This will be in the Coldspring Methodist Fellowship Hall. It is a wonderful event and always beautifully organized.
On a different note, if you would like to attend Yoga classes at the Coldspring Library, you can do so every Wednesday from 5:45-6:45 p.m. For more information on either of these events, call (936) 653-3104.
•Shepherd Chamber of Commerce is working on the Shepherd Farmers Market to be held monthly at the park beside the Library. At the moment, the fourth Saturday of the month is being considered after several vendors have talked to us. If you are interested call me at the Chamber number.
Our latest small business is Dark Wolf Creations. They do custom Laser engraved items, vinyl decals, apparel and handmade wreaths as well as other items.
•The Community & Children’s Impact Center on North Byrd Avenue in Shepherd have an amazing store with a huge variety of goods. This resale shop funds the Impact Center programs and there is something for everyone there. The prices are right too, just a few dollars or less. The tree outside has been decorated for the next celebration, Valentine’s Day. I am always amazed at how creative the decorators are with this tree.
•Shepherd is very fortunate in having its own police department. Since April 2023, when the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement gave authorization for the city to have its own Police Department, Clint Headley became Chief of Police. Now the City has two full-time officers and commissions 25 reserve officers.
He told me that his position requires ongoing training through the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute every two years.
Headley was born in Houston and started his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Houston Police Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree with support from the prestigious 100 Club Scholarship. He was inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma, the national Criminal Justice Honor Society.
Clint and his wife live in Livingston. They both love living in this area of Texas and he says “they deeply appreciate the East Texas lifestyle and welcoming community.” His latest training course was an 80-hour police motorcycle course where he became a graduate of the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service.
Police motorcycles have to be outfitted with special items. The officer must be able to handle the motorcycle as well as the special additions while riding safely. Thank you, Chief Headley, and all your team for your dedication to the City of Shepherd.
Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.
