  1. Yes, except for matching the garden to the building. Matching makes it easier to pick a design and if you don’t care it doesn’t matter, match it. I have seen homes evolve to match the garden. A portico here, stone path there, trees and shrubs to soften edges…

  2. It wont be long before i don’t have to make those considerations as i wont be here. So I’m making it for wildlife.

  3. I have two large retrievers AND a lovely garden. You have to teach the dogs not to trash your garden, just like they arent allowed to trash your house.

  4. A tree is a tree, and a garden is a garden? I own an old( 1950) villa, with a smallish park with oaks, maples, willows, etcetera,,,old cobble stone pads, vintage green house, but over time ( one has to?) it's been renovated, the old heavy slade sun terras, is padouk nowadays, with a jacuzzi on top ,the original wooden summer house was removed after 70+ years, and it's a lovely modern cubist garden veranda with sliding doors, and a terras in front, old and new combine perfectly, my friend,a dentist build a super modernisme bungalow in a Forrest were once stood an old villa, but he kept as much as possible of the hundred years old garden, trees, and again,it fits perfectly, but of course, location and in this case,,size really does matter, the More garden space, the higher the standard of living, and after four+ decades It hasn't been cheap, but worth every penny raising your children in!

  5. Utterly disagree with the point about the garden not matching the house because it would look stupid. Stupid to whom? A pompous, opinionated stranger?
