A Dusty painting by a famed artist which was found in a garden shed has fetched £1400 at auction.

The picture by Glasgow-born Dean, best known for her oil paintings, was only put up for auction after being found in a shed during a house clearance earlier this year and was snapped despite being in such poor condition.
Art expert Pippa Wilkins, of Mullberry Bank auction in Glasgow, who sold the painting last week said: “The painting is in quite a rough condition and it could take a lot of work to clean and repair it so it could really shine. It deserves to be in a museum.
“Dean and her husband the artist Robert Macaulay Stevenson were followers of James McNeill Whistler and you can see his influence in her work although she had her own voice.”

The Glasgow Girls were a trailblazing group of female artists but their work has only recently begun to receive the recognition it deserves. While their male contemporaries, the Glasgow Boys, regularly see their paintings sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds, the women were largely ignored for most of the last century.
Only in recent years have the Glasgow Girls reputations grown as historians and collectors reassess their role in Scottish art.
The painting features Dean’s stepdaughter, Jean Macaulay Stevenson, who she painted many times throughout her life.
Her mum had died in childbirth with Jean. Dean was born in 1866 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where she was a contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and fellow Glasgow Girl Bessie MacNicol.
Comparable works by Dean have sold for between £25,000 and £30,000.
