There has been a changing of the guard at one of County Roscommon’s best known horticultural retailers, with Ronan O’Conghaile stepping down after 40 years at the helm of Ardcarne Garden Centre.
Mr O’Conghaile has handed ownership of the business to long-serving manager Mary Frances Dwyer and her husband Paul, both of whom have worked at the centre since it first opened in 1986. Staff and customers gathered at the Ardcarne Garden Café for a ceremony marking the change of ownership and to wish him well in his retirement.
Alongside his retail work, Mr O’Conghaile has become known for his long term involvement in forestry, having planted his first commercial forest in 1996. He has since developed multiple sites and spoken publicly about the role of forestry in land management and rural enterprise.
Ardcarne Garden Centre – named after the surrounding townland and parish – opened 40 years ago with just one staff member. Today, it operates its flagship store at Ardcarne, Boyle, and a second branch on the Lanesboro Road in Roscommon town, established in 1998. Both offer a broad range of plants, gardening supplies and seasonal products.
The Boyle centre, located near the shores of Lough Key, also features the Ardcarne Garden Café, which serves homemade, locally sourced food. Both sites open seven days a week, with the Boyle branch trading from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 12pm to 6pm on Sundays.
In addition to retail, Ardcarne Garden Centre runs seasonal workshops, gardening courses and promotional events throughout the year.
