OSAGE CITY, Kan. – Frontier Extension District and a local garden supplier have scheduled a workshop to teach gardeners how to start seeds indoors for their gardens.
“Where to Start When Starting Seeds” at 6 p.m. Feb. 18, 2026, at Osage Garden and Produce, 1048 Laing St., Osage City, Kan., will focus on helping gardeners learn how to maximize their success when starting seeds indoors.
Lauren Gammill, Frontier District horticulture and natural resources agent, will discuss soil mixes used when starting seeds indoors – what these mixes contain and how they help the seedling. Participants will make their own soilless seed starting mix to take home to use this spring.
Osage Garden and Produce owner Becky Siljenberg will talk about materials needed when starting seeds, how to create a good environment for the seedlings, how to choose varieties and schedule your plantings, and issues that arise when starting seeds indoors.
Participants will have a chance to win seed packets and get their hands dirty with friends and neighbors while making their own seed mix.
Starting seeds indoors allows a jump start on the gardening season. It’s also a good way to get excited for the growing season.
“During the cold, dreary winter, it’s good to have something to look forward to and remind us that the spring and summer aren’t as far away as we think,” said Gammill.
Anyone interested in attending this event is asked to register by contacting Gammill at the Ottawa Frontier Extension office, 785-229-3520 or laurengammill@ksu.edu.
Anyone who cannot attend the meeting can watch live on Facebook or see the recording afterward on the Frontier Extension website.
