Hello all, after some advice as I am a complete novice when it comes to plants. Ive just had delivered by Gardening Express these Thuja Occidentalis Brabant and Im seeing a lot more brown than I was expecting (the browns a lot clearer in person than on the photos). Is this normal or have Gardening Express pulled a fast one on me?

If they are alright and will survive, is there anything I can do to help them along and promote speedy growth? Ive use mycorrhiza fungi before with other plants but wasnt sure if the fungi are specific to certain species of plants. The intention is to make a hedge and have them all grow together and into each other.

Appreciate any and all advice you can provide. Thank you

Could be a number of reason, best to give the supplier a call if you are worried.

    Common Causes for Browning Thuja

Drought Stress: Insufficient water, especially in hot summers or dry autumns/winters, causes the plant to turn brown as it dehydrates.

Winter Burn: Cold, drying winds and bright winter sun dehydrate foliage when the ground is frozen and roots cannot replace water, leading to browning on exposed sides.

Root Rot/Soggy Soil: Too much water or poorly drained soil (like clay) causes root rot, resulting in brown, dying foliage.

Natural Shedding: Interior browning in autumn is normal, as older, inner needles die off.

Pests/Disease: Infestations (like mites or scale) or fungal blights can cause scattered, patchy browning.
