Councillor Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, cabinet member responsible for waste services, revealed the figure in response to a question from Councillor Celia Hibbert during a meeting of Wolverhampton Council.

At the start of this year, the council raised the cost of its garden waste ‘purple bin’ collection from £40 a year to £55, sparking a petition from the opposition Conservative group.

But Councillor Gakhal added that 21,471 people had chosen to renew their subscriptions, and would continue to receive the service.
