Oahu officials sent out a notice saying Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden is closed Monday, Feb. 2, because of strong southerly winds.
As of Monday morning, powerful wind gusts up to 50 mph were knocking down trees and branches throughout the garden.
Wind advisories are in effect for the entire state until Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 6 a.m.
Oahu officials also warned people to be safe while driving, as the strong winds can make it difficult to steer, particularly vehicles that sit higher off the ground. The wind may also cause objects — trees, roof shingles, tents, etc. — to fall or blow onto the road.
The high winds also cause rough ocean conditions, with a Small Craft Advisory and Gale Warning issued across the state. Officials said it is not a good day for ocean recreation.
The strong winds also caused thousands of power outages, especially in East Oahu. Click on this Spectrum News Hawaii weather article for the latest information on power outages.
