A Tynemouth Front Street social club is seeking approval for a make-over including revamping the pub garden, amid local objections. North Tyneside Council’s planning committee will meet next week, February 11, to decide on plans for a make-over of Tynemouth Social Club.
The proposals include installing bi-folding windows to allow the opening up of the front. The application also calls for: “…the existing family garden to be resurrected and fully refurbished”.
This includes the installation of a temporary building “based on a container unit” to be used as unisex and disabled toilet for the garden. Councillors have been called on by council officers to approve the plans.
The local authority’s report on the application states: “It is the officer’s opinion that, subject to conditions, the proposals would not have an adverse impact on the residential amenity of surrounding residents of the character of the conservation area.
“The impact on the highway network is also considered to be acceptable.”
In response to some of the 13 local objections raised, council officers have stated that the applicant would be happy to remove one of the existing gates and prevent patrons from accessing the garden from Percy Street.
However, the use of the garden continues to generate concerns. One objector commented: “I am worried about smells from food, smoking, and drink infiltrating my home. We already suffer from drinkers who use the existing space as a smoking area, as well as from further afield from the village’s many restaurants.
“In summer we are unable to open our windows on an evening because of this.”
All three Tynemouth councillors have also written to the committee asking it to take into consideration the potential impact of the development.
