What’s this large moss-like thing growing in a tree trunk in the PNW?

    It’s a species of lungwort, probably Lobaria pulmonaria. Nitrogen fixer, grabs atmospheric nitrogen that plants can’t use, and when it decomposes the forest gets a nice boost of nitrogen in a form it can use

    Lung Lichen – Lobaria genus

    Lichen is fungi with algae and/or Cyanobacteria living inside it symbiotically. It’s highly complex with the exact dynamics of the relationship only now being elucidated. There’s an increased appreciation for other yeast fungi as part of the equation now.
