Birds make our gardens happier places, and they need our help, too, especially considering native species are in decline in the UK. February brings a spell of dreary, cold, and wet weather – the ideal time to make sure our feathered visitors to gardens are properly fed, according to Monty Don.
Providing them with food supports their energy and warmth, ultimately helping not only their survival but also guaranteeing a lively presence in your garden
Monty instructed: “Keep feeding the birds as they begin to mate, nest, and lay their first clutches of eggs.
“The better nourished the parent birds are, especially during cold weather, the larger and healthier their offspring will be.
“Make sure to provide fat, nuts, and seeds daily throughout the month, and don’t forget to offer fresh drinking and bathing water.”
Monty has previously cautioned against offering grains, as these tend to draw pigeons, sparrows, squirrels, and even rats, which can cause considerable disruption in your garden.
Instead, focus on energy-rich foods such as seeds, nuts, and fats to guarantee the birds receive the nourishment they need.
Regularity is key when feeding birds. Maintaining a reliable food supply allows them to view your garden as a dependable source of sustenance.
Furthermore, they need to have access to fresh drinking water, especially during freezing conditions.
Monty Don’s February guidance reminds us that by providing birds with appropriate food and clean water, we can support their survival and welfare, whilst also enjoying the beauty they add to our gardens.
This simple yet meaningful gesture of compassion can make a substantial difference to the wildlife in your locality.
