NatWest has confirmed its will close for the final time on June 3, with the nearest branches for customers being in St Albans, Hitchin and Hoddesdon.
Its the second bank in less than a week to announce it will be leaving Welwyn Garden City, with Santander confirming its branch would go on May 5.
NatWest said an average of 176 customers used the town’s branch every month, a decrease of 49 per cent from October 2019 to October 2025.
Business customer numbers were also down, with 114 on average using the branch while 79 per cent chose to use online banking.
“With the ease of mobile and online banking fewer people are coming into the bank. This means we’ve had to make some tough choices about which can stay open. We want to make sure that we keep the branches people are using most,” the bank said.
“We completely understand that online banking isn’t right for everyone. Sometimes you want to chat things through with someone. We promise that you’ll still be able to talk to one of our team either on the phone, by video or in one of our other branches.”
