I'm back again with this red push pistash tree. It was planted 2 years and about 3 months ago. I posted last year about pruning advice and it seemed like letting it be for the year was what I got so that's pretty much what I did. I'm starting to think the bottom branches are getting a bit big now and I'd like it to look a bit more like a tree and less like a sad bush. I've done a little pruning already (photo 9) but I would like to get rid of the red lines for sure plus some if we think the tree can handle it. It's growing so much but not putting much into the top. I also know the top isn't an ideal tree with it not having a leader. It was topped when I bought it and I bought it before I knew better. So any advice on how I can help it in that regard would also be welcomed

Red lines show where I want to cut. Yellow lines are the photos with the tape measure so there some frame of scale.

Purple line is a bit over 7 feet from the ground and it's about 9 feet at that tallest point.

It's the first tree me and my wife planted right after we bought the house.

  1. You were right to take the advice of letting it grow more before pruning… My vote is to let it grow for a couple more years, but keep the pruning conversation going each year. That way in a couple more years when it finally needs pruning you’ll have thought about all the options so much that you’ll make the best decisions. If you want to do any pruning sooner than that, try doing a light thinning to simplify branch structure in the Summer months when it won’t be noticeable and you’ll better be able to tell where the leaves are too crowded.

dont prune the limbs however you should remove the girdling roots at the base of the trunk
