British Garden Centres says that with a few simple changes, gardens can become vital havens for birds in every season, not just during the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.
Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres, said: “Your Birdwatch results are the perfect starting point.
“If you had very few visitors at all, that’s your garden telling you it needs more habitat.
“Use this weekend as your baseline, then make small changes and compare your results next January to see the difference.
“Feeders and seed mixes are vital, but adding plants that provide natural food and shelter creates a truly thriving, year-round haven for birds.”
The group recommends planting berried shrubs such as hawthorn, pyracantha, cotoneaster and holly to support birds, especially during winter when food is scarce.
Other practical steps include leaving seed heads on perennials like sunflowers and teasels, creating log piles to support insects and allowing parts of the lawn to grow wild.
With 74 centres across the UK, British Garden Centres offer a wide range of supplies and advice for creating bird-friendly gardens.
