Been digging an in-ground bed the past few days, literally all pure black clay so was a pain to dig. A Hoe made it all so much easier. My 2.5 year old boy chipped in!
The bricks bordering it are ones that I found discarded around my rental property and I thought I’d put them to good use.
It’s about 28 inches below ground level, 3ft wide and over 6 feet long. Thought I’d have her filled today but I ran out of soil 🙁

Man, shoulda just went with a raised bed and saved your back
Just backfill some of the clay you took out. Clay has nutrients and grate water retention. Just gets a bad reputation when it’s packed and has little organic material
Looked like a grave in the beginning
next time buy 4 pieces of wood and put your top soil / garden soil on top , easier, and clay wont leech in , plus you can use the wood as baseboards and screw metal tubing in the corners and build a trellis, surround it in net or even a mini greenhouse : )
Will it be able to drain adequately if surrounded by clay?
I have heavy clay soil and just put down cardboard over the lawn and then 8” of compost on that. Before planting I use a broadfork to loosen up everything and aerate the native soil. If you ever expand you may want to look into no dig methods.
