Hi all,
Apologies if this has been covered in earlier posts (am too lazy to scroll all the way through) but inspired by David Attenborough's Wild London, I would like to start helping any hedgehogs that might be coming around our small garden.
However, my worry is about attracting rats, 100% something I do not wish to invite around the house. Has anyone in central-ish London been able to achieve the successful feeding and harbouring of hedgehogs but without inviting rats?
Any tips or help much appreciated.
Enclosed is a cute hedgehog for added awwwwww

I think at this time of year hedgehogs are hibernating so you shouldn’t be seeing them around.
I don’t have any solutions to feeding them without also feeding rats. There are plenty of solutions to prevent cats from eating hedgehog food, but unfortunately if it’s big enough for a hedgehog to get to it than a rat certainly can.
Apparently it’s better to feed kitten biscuits rather than hedgehog food because the hedgehog food doesn’t have to comply to any kind of food safety standards for animals whereas cat food does.
If you want to attract hedgehogs but limit rats rather than directly feeding the hedgehogs create a wild natural space for them that will attract bugs for them to eat and provide them with shelter. Also a hedgehog highway between your garden and any neighbours, they can easily travel a mile overnight so need a way to move freely around their territory.
