Christchurch Greyfriars Church Garden has a rich history and was nearly lost forever during the Great Fire of 1666, according to the City of London.

Set on the site of the Franciscan Church of Greyfriars, which dates to 1225, royal figures, including four queens, are buried at the old church.

In 1666, during the Great Fire, the old church was destroyed, and a new church designed by Sir Christopher Wren was completed in 1704.

Wren’s church was left in ruins in the 1940s during the Blitz, leaving the west tower as its final remains.

In 1989, a rose garden was created in the area to reflect the floor plan of the original church.

Box-edged beds now represent the original position of where pews once stood, with wooden towers representing the stone columns of the former church.

Christchurch Greyfriars Church Garden is free to enter and is open all year round to visitors.

Guests who have visited the garden have described it as “beautiful” and an “oasis” on Google Reviews.

One guest wrote: “Lovely oasis of green in the city centre.
