ST. LOUIS – If the cold weather has you stuck indoors this weekend, we’ve found a warm-weather escape you’ll love.

With a lineage that dates back over a century, we have the return of the Orchid Show at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

“It’s just a huge, huge variety of orchids. Very colorful, very tropical, kind of the brief vacation to a warm place, everybody’s looking for at this point,” said Sheryl Salaris, a Missouri Botanical Garden Member.

A multicolored palette of petals awaits both old and new visitors.

“The Orchid Show is the only time of the year you can come out to the garden and see all of these orchids in one place. Occasionally, you’ll see one or two in the Climatron, but during the Orchid Show, we bring out around 350 to 400 at any given time,” said Jessika Eidson with the Missouri Botanical Garden.

And one won’t have to dress in too many layers to come out and enjoy this garden favorite.

“I brought my coat, but didn’t require it. And so it’s a nice place to come. You can probably also bring the kids without having to bundle them up,” Sheryl said.

For the professional or amateur photographer, it’s a chance to capture a picture-perfect scene.

“You can bring your cell phone camera or your good camera, and you can take lots of pictures of all the flowers. That’s something I do, I create these little catalogs of flowers and pictures—kind of an artistic expression,” said Steven Salaris, visiting the gardens.

The Orchid Show is included in garden admission, and you’ll get more than what meets the nose.

“This year, we’re also focusing on the scents that orchids make. So we’re having a little fun, we’re saying bad scents, good scents, non-scents. How are we capturing those smells as scientists and studying them? So you can learn a little bit more about that while you’re looking through the show,” said Eidson.
