This is String of Pearls (Curio rowleyanus, formerly Senecio rowleyanus), and it’s currently flowering on my balcony in Barcelona.

The flowers are small and white with long red/pink stamens and have a subtle cinnamon-like scent. Usually, String of Pearls flowers in late winter or early spring, and flowering is often triggered by:

  • cooler temperatures
  • good light
  • a clear day/night temperature difference

Many people never see this plant bloom indoors, so I was really surprised to see it happen naturally on a balcony. It seems very happy with mild Mediterranean winters.
