Young seal found near chicken coop following Storm Chandra

A seal pup has been rescued after it was found in a private garden near St Buryan, Cornwall, on Wednesday.

The juvenile seal was located beside a chicken coop in the garden at St Loy, having apparently made its way inland due to rough seas and flooding caused by Storm Chandra earlier in the week.

According to the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), the seal had left the beach, crossed the coastal path and squeezed under a gate to reach the garden nearly 100 metres from the shore.

In a statement shared on social media, BDMLR said: “Plot twist in the hen house…

“A seal pup in Cornwall decided to go on an unexpected inland adventure after coming up off the beach, crossing the coast path, squeezing under a gate and heading nearly 100 metres into a private garden – finally settling down near a chicken coop of all places.

“Our BDMLR South West Medics attended to check the pup over, and thankfully it was bright, alert and in good condition.

“On discussion, relocation was authorised due to its proximity to domestic animals, distance from the sea and unsafe conditions to return it there due to heavy seas from Storm Chandra.”

The BDMLR advised that seals can travel significant distances over land, particularly younger animals.

They urged anyone spotting a seal to avoid approaching or touching it, maintain a safe distance, ensure dogs are kept away, and to call their advice line on 01825 765546 for assistance.
