A talk will be held in Dorchester by Dorchester and District Gardening Club talk on the author’s green spaces at Hardy’s Cottage and Max Gate.

Fans of Thomas Hardy and garden enthusiasts alike are invited to this fascinating evening at the United Church Hall, Charles Street, Dorchester, on Wednesday, February 4 from 7.30pm to 9.15pm. Doors open at 7.15pm.

The talk, presented by garden historian Phil Broomfield – known as The Garden History Detective – will uncover the stories behind the gardens at Hardy’s birthplace in Higher Bockhampton and his later home, Max Gate, in Dorchester.

Mr Broomfield, who specialises in researching and interpreting historic gardens across the country, will shed light on how Hardy’s surroundings may have influenced his writing and life.

The event forms part of the Dorchester and District Gardening Club’s monthly programme and promises to be an engaging evening for anyone interested in local heritage, literature or landscape design.

All are welcome — entry is free for members and £4 for visitors. Refreshments will be available, along with a bring-and-buy stall and raffle. Annual membership is £20 for new and renewing members.
