Do you have to use cardboard as the base layer? What is the purpose of the cardboard? And what if you don't use it or incorporate it?

I agree with the no dig approach to gardening . It is not only the best way, it is the way gardening flourishes .However, I do not agree with the atheistic ideology of millions of years and reducing our carbon footprint to save Mother Earth.

I live in the mountains, we have clayey soil, which can keep the 10 inches of soil soggy in a 12-inch raised bed, and critters that dig holes all over our yard, and it's not too deep till you hit bedrock.
Depends on the location. For us, raised beds make sense.
The key to any successful garden is soil preparation you have to work with the soil in your area i start a compost heap , i use horse manure stray and organic micro nutrients and lime depending on the PH, in the compost heap and the garden space i mix with existing soil cover with 2 to 4 inches of straw.i now have the beginning of healthy soil and I do not have to dig the soil again I top dress every year gently raking the surface than adding more compost and straw .now I have incorporated hugelkulter at the beginning since I'm rebuilding the soil …works for me. Raised beds warm up faster in spring and really help get off to a good start, but I find mice move in if you aren't careful.

I put chicken wire under my raised garden beds to prevent the wood chucks from stealing my crops. That, and the height make a raised bed more practical for me.
How about giving God the credit for his creation rather than buying into the billions of years of evolution. If you look more closely into it, you will see that there are two kinds of evolution; the micro that is actually happening via mutation etc, and the "macro – tree of life" version that only "happens" in the mind of people who don't want to accept God's moral standard for what is good.

Charles Dowding's method is essentially perfect, however, if I were to follow his method I would have to use enormous quantities of compost that I am unable to produce even if I have a forest at my disposal…. I remember that even just 10 cm of compost placed on a 1000 square meter plot requires 100 cubic meters of soil….
If you have bad knees or back. Raised bed is the better option
