A garden centre company has confirmed its takeover of a Grantham site after weeks of speculation about its future.

Grantham’s Downtown Garden Centre has joined family-run British Garden Centres.

The acquisition will see the site rebrand as Grantham Garden Centre and become the group’s 75th centre.

The centre has already closed temporarily for refurbishment. Upgrades are planned to the retail space, restaurant facilities and outdoor plant areas before the store reopens in the early spring.

The existing Downtown team will remain in place, ensuring continuity for customers.

The announcement follows rumours earlier this month that the garden centre would close briefly for a refit.

Charles Stubbs, director of British Garden Centres, said the Grantham site was key to the group’s growth plans.

“Bringing Grantham Garden Centre into the group marks another important step in our ongoing growth plan,” he said.

“Grantham is a thriving market town with a strong gardening community, and we’re excited to invest in a centre that has served customers well for many years.

“Our refurbishment will enhance what’s already there while introducing the wider product range and services our customers expect.

“Most importantly, we’re keeping the experienced team who know their customers and their community.”

Peter Isaac, managing director of Downtown, described the move as positive for all involved.

“We are delighted to be leasing the garden centre to British Garden Centres and are pleased that the team will remain in place,” he said.

“The planned upgrades will further strengthen the Grantham site as a destination for visitors, alongside the current department store.

“It’s a win-win for British Garden Centres, Downtown and our customers, and we wish British Garden Centres every success.”

There are other branches of British Garden Centres in the county including in Horncastle, Alford, Louth and Skegness.

The acquisition continues British Garden Centres’ expansion, following the addition of Ferndale Garden Centre in Derbyshire and a series of acquisitions in 2025, including former Dobbies sites and Hayes Garden World in Cumbria.
